Benefits of Individual Therapy

Benefits of Individual Therapy for Opioid Abuse

Those who battle with the struggles of addiction will find that they experience more than just a physical dependency to the substance they are abusing. Addiction is not just caused by the physical act of ingesting the substance, however it is often caused by a variety of different issues that can also be psychological and/or emotional. Since addictions are extremely complex, individual therapy is always included into the treatment plan that a person is participating in at one of our centers.

Individual therapy, which is treatment that requires meeting with a counselor on a regular basis, is often highly beneficial for someone who is striving to recover from an addiction to substances, such as prescription pills or heroin. The benefits of individual therapy can include:

  • Identifying traumatic experiences that have likely contributed to addiction development
  • Obtaining new vantage points on underlying causes of addiction
  • Developing coping skills that focus on addressing stress management and negative emotions
  • Processing both struggles and victories throughout treatment
  • Determining ways to cope with tempting situations and/or cravings
  • Establishing short-term and long-term individual goals

Through individual therapy, a person can make sense of his or her emotions, behaviors, and decision-making skills that contributed to the addiction. As a result, a person often learns from this understanding in ways that help build a healthy and happy recovery. Individual therapy serves as an excellent platform to discuss these types of things, as it helps a person not only express and understand themselves, but also obtain support from his or her counselor.

In conjunction to the above listed benefits, individuals who obtain this form of therapy will also likely experience the following during their treatment:

  • Increased self-confidence
  • Improved self-esteem
  • Reduction in stress
  • Increased self-awareness

These are major benefits that are often utilized as stepping stones towards a person’s full-fledged recovery, free from the chains of addiction.
